What Accounting System Do You Use On Your Farm? (Poll Results)

2,292 FBN members spanning 7.7 million acres of farms responded to today’s poll where we asked, “which accounting system do you primarily use on your farm?”

Members reported that QuickBooks® is the most popular accounting system across the USA & Canada. As farming operations grow in acreage, fewer members utilize paper & pencil and excel to manage accounting records.

For members who responded “other”, which primary accounting systems do you use on your farm? How would you rate your experience?

Centerpoint for Ag from Redwing Software and I love it.

We have been using it since 2000

Mind if I ask what it cost you? I’m going to look into it next week but was curious about pricing since they don’t list one.

Farm works. Its the only software that does full accounting (cash, accural) and takes your monitor information and ties everything back to the fields. Awesome software if you know what your doing.

This looks really nice, but doesn't look like it could be used with agleader

Verified FBN Member (WA)

You can download from agleader monitors using a thumb drive and the import tool.

Verified FBN Member (ND)

Yes it works with ag leader have used it for years.

Easy Farms by Vertical Solutions

Verified FBN Member (NE)

Sage100 at work and QuickBooks for personal clients. Keep waiting for FBN to come up with a solution like Granular, Conservis, AgWorld, etc. Something smaller farm friendly that ties in the financial side with the production monitor information already collected.

Verified FBN Member (ND)

Yes we feel the same way! Can't seem to find anything that ties the two together. Waiting on you FBN😉

Verified FBN Member (ND)

Farmworks already does that.

Verified FBN Member (MN)

have you looked at Harvest Profit, Farm at Hand or Farm Brite. Do some of the same things as Granular but much cheaper.

Verified FBN Member (KY)

Granular

Verified FBN Member (KY)

One of the biggest things we like about Granular is they have staff to help us do the things we don't always time to get done. Plus we like how it ties to my John Deere and Quickbooks

Verified FBN Member (SD)

I wouldn't call granular an accounting program. It helps you manage your farm but as far as accounting goes granular does not do that. Like you said you have to pair your your QuickBooks with it in order to get an accounting function to tie in and you have to do the online version of QuickBooks. Probably the biggest thing to think about is what software your tax accountant is most familiar with so he can navigate your finances easily at the end of the year. Granular is not cheap by any means and in order to really utilize it you must spend tons and tons of time with virtual meetings and phone calls and data doesn't always transfer seamlessly even if it is John Deere. IMO it is a cool tool but for the price I didn't see the return on our farm.

Verified FBN Member (MB, CAN)

AgExpert is a excellent Program

Agriculture designed

Verified FBN Member (AB, CAN)

Use AgExpert as well. Works good for and accountant has ad well, so easy to transfer info

Verified FBN Member (ON, CAN)

We use AgExpert too. We get the program through FCC Canada

Verified FBN Member (WA, AUS)

Use Agworld here but would be great if FBN had a tool to plan and then be able to order with FBNDirect straight from the plan.

Microsoft Money. I know its not a farm accounting system, but for my needs it works.

Verified FBN Member (KS)

I’ve been using FarmWorks since 2000. I really like it and the details it goes to (does take a lot of time). However, since Trimble bought it 8 or 10 years ago they have put very little into updating it. Now they are discontinuing support after this year. So, as much as I hate to, I’m looking for new software after 20 years. I’ll definitely check out all that are mentioned in this thread.

Verified FBN Member (SD)

Went from easy farm to PC Mars. Very good move. Does everything, great support.

Yeah I have been with them since 1998. I really like the new Traction ag but very expensive. 950 for accounting and 950 for precision. I feel I have 15 years left in farming so that would be over 28000 I would spend and have nothing to sell at the end. Traction ag comes from the farmworks employees that were let go. So there is years of experience in farm accounting and precision ag. Goodluck. I maybe going backwards but I think I will be going back to the old excel spreadsheets.

Verified FBN Member (KS)

I’ve been looking at Traction too. Waiting to see how it turns out. Didn’t realize it will be $950 X 2. Like you say, that really adds up.

Verified FBN Member (MN)

Started with Traction this year. In the beginning stages but so far like it. They have slot of new things in the works

Verified FBN Member (KS)

We have ran on FarmWorks since 1998 and the only thing better will be Traction. Looked at a lot of different products, we only need inventory, cash and accrual, and most importantly the ability to enterprise everything, from crops to equipment. The most important is the help to get it entered correctly. Fortunately my better half understands FarmWorks very well. At the moment she is running on both Traction and Farmworks. The Traction people understand what opportunity is in this business!!!

Verified FBN Member (WA, AUS)

I use Xero, very fast and easy to use

Verified FBN Member (IA)

Same here, my financial officer got me into it. I like that I can use it anywhere!

Verified FBN Member (SK, CAN)

Ag-Expert.

Verified FBN Member (IN)

I have been using Horizon for accounting and payroll. It is an old DOS program that has long ago ceased to be supported. I don’t have to worry about viruses or annual fees or upgrades. I’m on Windows XP. I know it is only a matter of time before my computer and printers give up. I’ve told my kids they can switch when they take over. This computer is not connected to the internet and is only used for accounting and excel. I do a lot of record keeping on spreadsheets.

I know I’m a dinosaur but my accountant says I have better records than nearly all of her clients.

Quick Books

Verified FBN Member (KS)

Quickens

Verified FBN Member (MI)

Used to use PC Mars but just switched to Quickbooks.

Verified FBN Member (WA)

We use QuickBooks Online and like the option to allow our accountant access with out having to send them downloads. However QuickBooks isn’t ag friendly and it’s difficult to tally / separate your daily position with ag loan inputs. It doesn’t know . I like the simplicity of payroll but in WA State , my quick book taxes never match online reporting .

Easy Farm Looks inviting. They are going to be bring in the precision facing soon. But there farm accounting has been around for years.

Verified FBN Member (AB, CAN)

AgExpert FCC

Verified FBN Member (MN)

Started with RedWing Ag Accounting many years ago, could not get enough support and switched to Farm Works and it works really well, and had support until Trimble bought it and tried switching things to data management and not true accounting, now that they are discontinuing support all together, I have started on Traction Ag and yes it is more expensive, the support so far is very good, lots of things that they transferred or entered from my Farm Works to Traction Ag to get me started. Time will tell but there are many new additions being added yet, and tweaks be made in the development stage. True Cash or Accural accounting with add on things like Payroll and it is all cloud based to be able to look things up on other devices. Also on going balance sheet anytime. Just getting going with 2022, so plenty of learning yet.
