You're probably familiar with using rye as a cover crop before beans, but why not add a little extra diversity for a whole lot of benefit. Rapeseed and flax both come from different plant families, (brassicaceae and linaceae respectively) bringing with them a whole host of new microbial diversity to the soil. This is especially helpful on corn and bean rotations where grasses and legumes dominate the landscape. Try the Pre-Bean mix as a fall planted cover crop prior to planting beans in the spring.

Drill seed at 3/4" to 1" depth or broadcast and lightly incorporate 4-6 weeks before first frost. Plant 60 pounds per acre when seeding with a no-till drill or other planting implement and 90 pounds per acre when broadcasting. For best results, plant 4-6 weeks before the first average frost date during the fall. Planting can continue even through the first few frosts but the mix will likely not grow much in the fall and spring growth will be only from the most winter hardy species in the mix, likely rye, barley, and vetch.
