Horsepower to pull a 24 row ccs planter?

Wondering what size of tractor would pull it just fine. I’ve got an 8420 John Deere with single front wheels and am wanting to upgrade to a 24 row planter. Just wondering if I’m gonna need something a bit bigger?

We pull our 24 row with a JD8330 with singles on the front. Works perfect.

We pull our 24 row in hills with no problem with 8420

You’ll be fine, we used an 8420 with single front tires for years. Would highly recommend a full rack of weights up front though, it’s when your transporting the planter full of seed front weight is highly recommended. Hydraulics you’ll be fine as we ran the vac’s and hydraulic drive motors as well, in the terraces

If you’re looking for a planter, we have a very nice 2013 **** Deere 1770nt with 24 row, 30” for sale

How much you asking for it?

If your worried about hydraulic requirements just find a PTO pump for your vac motors.

We run a 24 row DB planter with an 8420. Singles in the front but full weights all the way around. No shortage of horsepower. Hydraulic capacity will be the question. Our planter is hydraulic drive plus two vacuum fans and the ccs fan. My JD tech says with planter on the ground running it requires 43 gallons per minute of flow. Our 8420 is equipped with a 60 gallon per minute pump.

it is a factor of weight and hydraulic flow capacity. Horsepower is not as concerning.

I use a 785B Challenger weighted to 32,000 on our 24 row with CCS I have some hills and I would not want anything smaller .

I have delta force, a hydraulic alternator for the vDrive, two vac fans, CCS Fan, and two hydraulic vrd motors to run the 2x2 and in-furrow fertilizer.

So there is a lot of oil needs ...

You can run the 8420 up to 350 hp if you see your short on power.

How do you up the hp

No problem at all. We pulled ccs 24 row with case 245 for years.

I know a lot of guys pulling 24 rows with 8420. We pull ours with a 8260R which is just the R series equivalent of an 8420. We have front duals which are nice but I think a guy could get by without just fine. Just make sure you 8420 has enough hydraulic output for that planter, good chance it would but doesn’t hurt to check.

Thanks for info. Just heard they have a lot of tongue weight and am worried about that in the 8420

We used to use a 8400 got along just fine.

I pull mine with a 315 magnum with duals, plenty of power, too much hp on it probably.

I pull mine with a 8285R (285HP) with front duels just fine. Would recommend having front duels though.
