Thinking about growing some durum next year...

Have only ever grown Hard Red Spring Wheat before. What do I need to consider that is different then HRS? Any tips and tricks, or advice is always welcome. Thanks!

Almost no premium to wheat around here, but I know some guys just plan to bin it and wait for the spreads then cash in. Of course you have to be able to cash flow to make that work

Interesting. Thank for the info!

yes color is important but that usually is affected by if you get it combined before a rain or heavy dew

they call that hard count and it is all up to the grader. No two people will get the same result. If you have a mill close they are not as tough on the grade as an elevator. most around here will not grow durum unless there is a 1.50 premium to hrs. because grading is so tough.

Thanks for the responses. We almost always use a fungicide in HRS anyway. What are the markets looking for when buying it? Protein? Falling numbers? What about color and bleaching? Do those affect grade like they do in other wheats? Thanks again.

make sure you do the calculation on seeding rate. we seed around 2.25 to 2.5 bu/ acre. and you must fingicide. otherwise everything else is the same.

even if there is no rainfall you will see a yield difference if you fungicide.

Fungicide is not necessarily a must. Depends on the rainfall and growing conditions.
