How are you planting Cotton in stripped wheat stubble?

How are you planting cotton in stripped wheat stubble? Do you plant directly in, Strip-Till first, vertical till first? I have always wanted to configure our planter with Precision Planting solutions and the right kind of wheels to plant directly in stubble, but some here are concerned we could end up with a train wreck. Our best soils are heavier black clay that holds moisture well, while other areas are a little sandier and clay loam mixture. We are central/west Texas. All dryland with an average annual rainfall of 22"/year.

Challenges of concern planting directly in stripped wheat stubble with zero tillage are:

  1. Managing 50-80 bushel wheat stubble with planter
  2. Getting good germination
  3. Ground not drying out quick enough if it's a rainy spring

If possible, what Precision Planting components and other hardware are top priority?

I run a strip till to clean and level the row On irrigated land we apply fertilizer below the row Our planter is equipped with Sunco row cleaners on the front and Schlagel closing wheels On dryland with less stubble the strip till is not necessary with the row cleaners With a precision planter I'm told you should be able to run faster without loosing accuracy
