Is nitrogen stabilizer worth the added cost

Question

We have never used any stabilizer with our 28% Liquid nitrogen. The rain the last two years we feel we have lost the majority of it to leaching away. We are just looking for a way to help carry the nitrogen longer into the year for when the corn needs it for making ear .

Stabilizer is always worth it to our operation. When you use a stabilizer it's more to prevent losses from volatilization and denitrification. Leaching is a risk whether you use the stabilizer or not. So the benefits of a stabilizer are keeping the nitrogen in a plant available form for uptake longer after its application.

Timing of application is critical so one other thing we do to help manage our N is split applications throughout the season which allows for plants to use nitrogen as it grows. You can also manage N better if you happen to get a heavy rainfall/leaching event by splitting applications too.
