Broadcast corn starter vs 2x2

thinking of broadcasting my corn starter this year to save time. Was wondering if anyone has any input on it

Nitrogen loss will be more from a broadcast surface application relative to 2x2 or in-furrow application so if you go that route I'd add a nitrogen stabilizer containing NBPT (i.e. FBN Nitrogen Stabilizer/Agrotain Ultra). If your starter just contains N, you should be ok broadcasting it as long as you stabilize it. Also, the P in a surface fertilizer app will get tied up/bound in the surface soil...

Thanks!

I’d like to get to the point of either knifing in nh3 or broadcast urea for my N. Then add phos with planter. Just not setup yet for that.

Yes, if 32% is surface applied, I would add NBPT as a stabilizer. If you can knife it or inject it below the surface, then a N stabilizer is less important but still helpful

Would the same hold true for liquid broadcast/streaming of 32% or 28-0-0-5?

We try to put N out based on rainfall forecast when we broadcast/stream it on but sometimes we can’t wait for that. I’ve wondered how much we lose if it doesn’t rain it in for 2-3wks?

We have our corn fertilizer spread or we put it in with our air seeder before corn planting that put our p & k out and some urea, then when the coop sprays pre emerg pass they do it with 20-25 gallons of 28% for the rest of our nitrogen. Then all we need to keep the planter filled with is seed and pop-up fertilizer.

I'm setting up my planter to do the opposite. I'm tired of trying to get trips across the field ahead of the planter with broadcast applications and am looking to be more efficient with my inputs. I am not sure what the yield results will be for me, but  's PFR shows a pretty solid yield advantage to 2x2 on one or both sides of the row.

My only reason for trying this is because I already am going across the field to put urea down. I do agree with being as efficient as possible with my inputs
