Why the Grain Market Could Firm After the August WASDE

The August USDA report will be released at 11AM CDT, and once it lands it's easy to anchor on a single headline number. But barring any significant bearish surprise, traders may look past today's print to a set of forces quietly building that could support corn, soybean, and wheat prices through the back half of the year:

  • A strengthening El Nino is raising the odds of weather trouble across the world's key growing regions.
  • Europe's drought keeps shrinking its corn crop and pulling in record imports, steering demand toward U.S. supply.
  • The Black Sea war is choking exports and stranding grain right at harvest.
  • China is following through on U.S. soybean buying ahead of a fall summit.
  • A closed Strait of Hormuz is squeezing global fertilizer, a slow-burn risk to next season's yields.
  • And the U.S. balance sheet looks to be tightening on its own.

Any one of these could fade, and a larger crop would cut against them. Still, as a group they add up to a story worth tracking as we head deeper into the second half of the year.

This is exactly the kind of picture our FBN Market Intelligence team tracks every morning, cutting through the noise with an independent, data-driven read (AI Crop Price Indicator), cash market insights, and daily updates.
