Advice for beginning farmer

My background is mainly ag as in my entire life has been around ag. I’ve worked on a handful of farms, but I am currently a full time fireman that works 24/48 shifts. I’ve wanted to have my own farm my entire life, but that looks bleak looking at what land prices and housing prices look like. My biggest question is how do financing work? I’d be looking to buy land that comes with a house and a shed in about 2 years. Land around me is going for about 10k an acre on average. What’s the best way to break into farming?

HI ****, the Farm Service Agency in your area offers low cost financing options for "beginning farmers/ ranchers", to purchase land, equipment and operating loans. I'd suggest contacting your local FSA and they can walk you through all of the options. They offer the lowest interest rates and are fairly easy to work with. They often require farm management experience for farm purchase loand, but there are a few options out there. As others have mentioned, you can start with the purchase of a smaller home base, where you can live and work on equipment, work cattle, etc, and you may be able to lease some additional land for haying or grazing, in order to help make equipment payments, in addition to doing some custom work in your spare time. It seems difficult, but it's not impossible, if you have the desire to have your own farm. Good luck and please reach out if you have any questions.

Excellent question! I’m the agronomist for FBN in the north central region. I’m also a volunteer firefighter in Volga , South Dakota. I know at least one guy who is a full time firefighter in Sioux Falls and farms in partnership with his brother. So I know someone who’s making that work.
