Question

I’m new to farming, I have older equipment but it’s coming time where I’m going to start buying new equipment. I like **** Deere but I’ve been hearing horror stories about them. Are they really the new apple? Im also into cnh if you have any opinions on them. Thanks

It depends a bit on what you’re planning to use.  For example, one of my tractors is a compact 4052r and I’ve hated it since a month or so after I purchased it. The paint on the FEL started peeling off with rust visible under the paint right away. JD denied any warranty claim.  Many other issues with it in the 3 years and 2000 hours I’ve owned

I think all things new are having problems with the electronics and getting too much out of too small of power plants and frames. From my experience there are series of deeres that have their issues and might shy away from owning. Two seasons ago to get in to a new tractor I went the leasing route with a JD 6155R and that seems to have been a really good decision and about 700 hours in and it’s working flawlessly. Whether Deere or case or fendt brand new or low hour lease I’d suggest the power guard warranty it’s an added expense but a lot cheaper then what shop rate and parts are now. As far as implements new really hasn’t been an issue for me and with the used market now it’s sometimes better to just get new and what you want.

I have farmed for 50 years and have done quite well without owning JD equipment. Most of my neighbors have green paint.  Farm equipment is a tool and shouldn't be a lifestyle as far as I'm concerned. A dealer and the company they represent needs to be there when YOU need them.  So, my advice for you is look at what you have in your area, buy only the equipment that you need, and understand that brand support is important.

equipment brand doesn’t mean anything anymore. What means the most is dealer support because inevitably they all break down. Now to the extent of the repair that will be your biggest cost. If you want to know the cost of ownership of a John Deere tractor or combine or any piece of equipment you need to go speak to the service manager and he can give you a breakdown of the most costly repairs that they see the most of and make a determination from there. I know from my own experience with John Deere equipment cost of ownership is growing substantially due to parts price increases.
