Paying employees

Question

How much are you paying your right hand farm hand? We have a employee who has been working with us for sometime now. Last year he approached us wanting to start with some of his own land. We are renting equipment to him at discounted price and he covers all other expenses. What would be fair market range  no benefits?

I'm paying over 70k now plus an extreme benefit package for a man a couple of years away from retirement. On the surface it's more than he's worth, but his knowledge of HOW I NEED things done in his duties keep him on my payroll. I'd pay over 100k with the same benefits for a man half his age with the same knowledge and without the underlying health issues. People like that are out there. Making the connection with someone has been the hard part.

when my boss got me started I got machinery free on 3 quarters of land. No pay check.  The land after that I paid a percentage of repairs and maintenance and all fuel.  This year he retired and I have it all seemed to work out.

Take $70k salary minus his acres of own land and deduct for complete start to finish custom farm rate. Discount as you wish. I figure $100/ac for guy that will help me, help him.

We are paying $70,000 plus health insurance for an excellent young employee.  He is very dependable, wants to learn new skills, and pleasant to be around.  We also allow him to coach a sport at the local school which sometimes becomes a bit of a challenge, but he does come back to the farm after practices if we need him to.  I do not want to lose this guy.
