What about the seed treatment?

Question

Has anyone on here been treating their own seed? How do you get along with it, and is it as easy as they say? I had looked at the box to box they sell here on FBN, and it looks pretty plug-and-play.

If anyone has experience with the treatment products they sell on here would be helpful as well.

I treat/clean my own seed wheat for fall use! We have a mixer can on our seed truck that dumps the treat into the auger. Works very well! Not sure if that helps your case or not.

We dabbled with Amplify L on corn last year with poor results.  Not sure if it was year but we will try it again this year.  Maynhave been our inexperience in applying the treatment as well.

We treat all of our soybeans and have treated corn in past.
You can do a poor job treating and have issues.
We have a Bayer on demand that wasn’t cheep but have no issue with unevenness.

I had actually bought the same treater a yr before it was offered on FBN .. I’m in MN .. the service in setting it up and yr after yr from ****** and *** is exceptional!!! 
I bought the dumb down version ( all the extras). But worth it .. there is a few tricks like anything but easy to learn and once you’ve done it a few times it does a excellent job!! If you have more than 700 units in a yr to do.. its a no brainer in cost savings and flexibility of selecting what you want to use and I’m in a area with a couple yrs of prevent plant and that alone gave me the flexibility to order untreated seed and then exchange or return!!

We treat almost all of our cereals on the farm. We have an older auger with a spray nozzle installed on the hopper for Raxil. We put a stopper on the bin gate so that we have consistent seed flow each time and use the chemical kegs & air compressor set up. It was a little bit of trial and error at the beginning but after a couple of loads we had it within 5% of recommended rate consistently.

We used a floor scale to double check the amount of of product used per load (I actually had it figured out to x lbs per minute) and adjust the pressure accordingly.

We treat about 800 units use a sprayer nozzle on a cup auger. We have done this for years it works very well after some trial and error. I usually cut the treatment in half and apply it twice to ensure even coverage it takes a little more time but I notice better results in the end in coverage and most importantly seedling vigor. If you test I recommend using a dye makes life a whole lot easier

I have been treating  over 800 units per year for the last three years and get along fine with it. I use a fung. Insecticide Poly,colorant comb. And spray it half. way up a poly cup auger on my seed tender. I average a pro box ever 15 minutes.I can do this for half the cost. Not bad wages for a rainy day. My treater cost $500 and is easy to operate after you calibrate it. I just dump a pro box in the tender into another pro box. Best $500 I ever spent.

It is not difficult but can be a hassle if you are doing a large amount just in time for planting.  The box to box treater works very well.  If you are having employees use it, pay the extra and get the more automated version for safety.  There are 3 different insecticides in use that are all neonicotinoids; thiamethoxam (Cruiser), clothianidin (Poncho) and imidacloprid (Gaucho).  Those are listed in order of both cost and, in my opinion, effectiveness.  Most growers don't really know what's on their seed anymore.  It's just "treated" or "fungicide plus insecticide."  There are some seed treatments that are very easy to apply and others that can really gum up your treater so get some opinions from people who use multiple treatments for a living.  I can tell you what they tell me, but I don't have personal experience with the ones they tell me to stay away from.  I will say that the Syngenta products like Cruiser typically top the list for effectiveness and ease of application, but also in cost.  No, I am not a Syngenta employee, sales person or otherwise.

I use a couple of different treaters and use a lot of different treatments.  Not all treatments are created equal and location and soil test should be looked at for best results. My favorite treater is a MyYeild that lets me over treat corn with various products.
