Corn population and yield goal

Question

We normally shoot for roughly a 185 bushel yield goal. Our agronomist likes high (in my opinion) populations. 36k is not uncommon, with a minimum around 32-33. We have dark, heavy clay soils and are in western MN. I'm wondering where others are located and what you're planting for similar yield goals?

That seems awfully high pop wise (though I don't farm anywhere close to MN). I know the AgPHD guys say 7-10bu/thousand, and in our experience in DRY western KS it's pretty accurate. We drop 16-18k and can get upwards of 200 if conditions are good (which hasn't happened for a couple years except isolated areas). I would run some strips in fields dropping all the way down to 20k. It's pretty easy to do and track with modern equipement.

in SW Missouri we plant 27-30k to get that yield result and depends on year with rain fall amounts and that’s on non irrigated

We are anywhere from 34-38,000. Yields between 180-270 depending on soil type. Northern IL.

What kind of flex do your hybrids have?  My understanding is that shorter season hybrids aren't bred for flex quite like some of those we plant in the dry Midwest.  But those kind of pops still seem high.  I've personally seen 60 acres of 109 day hybrid kick out over 10 bushel per 1,000 of population.  I planted 13k a few days ago on dryland. I believe if weather conditions come together it will be capable of 150.  Seems like yours could do 7-8 bushel per 1000 no problem...? Even figuring 7 bushel per 1000 is 224 bpa with 32k final stand.   But I'm a long ways from you too....
