Simple inventory system for shop supplies?

Anyone successfully using a barcode scanner/app or program on the scanner to successfully keep track of shop supplies that we try keep on hand. The paper ledger method is creating more work than it saves here for me and the cost of the bin or box or shelf being empty when the guys are working on a task is not small. Having a hard time finding something simple...some phone based apps look OK but I'm skeptical i'll have time invested in an app that doesn't do what it's supposed to do....again.
