Running new machine for 2 years costs around $300/hr on the thresher. But that’s a class 10 machine doing 5,000 acres per season. Around $25/acre. Less than $5000 in maintenance. In Canada.

Bought a new 7230 and just traded with 1400 separator hours on it.  With depreciation and repairs it figured out to be $180/separator hour.  This was by far the cheapest machine I have ran.  It was very reliable with low cost repairs.

We’ve put a significant amount of thought into this. Harvest is exspensive. We’ve ran machines from 300 engine hours and ran them all the way to 3,000. Payments on new are huge but we also ran in a little over 100,000 in repairs on a higher hour machine one season. I like to figure 125-150$ per engine hour or 175-200$ Per separator hour. That on fairly new green machines.

To everyone that is talking in cost per engine hour I have the honest question of why? Personally I am not worried about the engine for 4-5000 hours, but the threshing time and bushels through the machine are what I care about. I am honestly just curious as to the thought process.

When it comes to cost to trade up do you mean just getting newer or getting larger as well? The phrasing is getting me. But going to a larger machine figure backwards on how much more it has to do to keep you cost/acre or bushel the same and go from there. For just going to newer used for new look at it as 3% inflation in price (5% on average on new - 2% on used) and then multiply by years old and what the average sale price of your current equipment is. My point is not just the dollar amount per hour but to take into account the cost of the age of the machine as well as factoring against repairs and down time, etc.

If I remember right when we switched from a 2388 to 8230 about 4 years ago it was worth about $180 per separator hour, and an additional $10,000 per year. Ie. a machine with 700 separator hours and a 2 years newer might cost about 75,000 more than one with 1,000 separator hrs on it.

$110 - $140 is our goal.  We try to be the second owners and run them until they aren't reliable.  It's tough to do with an OEM dealer.

We Trade every year for a one-year-old Jd  Combine that has 300hr on it we put 360to 400Hr at  $155 to $160 per engine Hr. rare to spend anything on repairs so I would deduct an average repair bill of $13,000 annually to the cost of rolling a combine every year.

This is the hardest cost to figure out. I’m still kind of young, 12 years farming. We’ve tried the new every 3 years and then used. Used is definitely cheaper even with a $30,000 repair Bill every other year because very little depreciation. But the peace of mind of less field repairs, especially with employees sitting around waiting, getting done with harvest on time for the other fall projects, fuel is less in newer machines. A lot of unrealized costs that add up. But dealers charge usually around $200/hr for a pretty dependable machine. It is a cost that is very hard to minimize. You think, just add a few more acres will lower per acre cost and it just seems to stay the same or even cost more.
