Has anybody had a full hip replacement?

My father, uncle, and myself farm in west Tennessee. I’m the young guy and I just had to have my right hip replaced. Does anyone have any tips for farming with a new hip? The weight restriction seems like the biggest change, but climbing on equipment will be hard as well. Any tricks would be greatly appreciated.

My 40 year old son had a Birimgham Hip replacement. Excellent results without any restrictions. Doctor told him he could do anything including sky diving.   I had the more traditional replacement, and after healing, I can do anything I wish, climbing isn't a problem and there weren't any weight restrictions. There are different procedures for hip replacement. Its a little late after the procedure to explore the different options but they exist with different expected outcomes.

I’m 33, my doctor knows what I do for a living, the only thing they told me not to was water skiing. So far I’m feeling fine, luckily we have finished harvest and planting wheat so I can afford the down time. Honestly I’m just looking forward to be able to go walk in the fields.

At your age I would definitely recommend getting a resurfacing rather than a replacement. There are no restrictions with a resurface and it can be a lifetime procedure vs 20-25 years with a replacement. Find a doctor that will use cross linked poly vice the metal Birmingham hardware as about 2-3% can have a reaction to the metal ions with wear. Most orthopedic surgeons will just recommend a replacement as they are not trained in resurfacing. Insurance codes resurfacing the same as replacement so the doctor makes less with resurfacing as the hardware is more expensive and the operation takes longer. The technique and incision is different because they leave your femur intact where as a conventional replacement they saw off the top of your femur which gives easy access to the acetabular area for reaming out the socket which has to be done in either procedure. I had my poly resurfacing at age 52 and couldn’t be happier.

I had my first hip replacement in July of this year and my second one done 2 weeks ago. 58 years old. Should have done it 10 years ago. Find a good doctor that you trust. Mine does over 100 in a year. Has never had one dislocate. My neighbor had his replaced and it dislocated 10 days after surgery. He said it was the most pain he has ever had in his life. He used a different doctor than me. Doctor said I can do anything unless it hurts. No restrictions. Haven’t felt this good in years.

I am now two weeks in to my new hip and I feel great, still going through the physical therapy but I’m already getting around better than beforehand. Took a walk across a wheat field today pain free, thank God for modern medicine.
